Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy
WELCOME!
Dre Roxanne Ouellet, MD
We all know that the best way to achieve our life’s goals is to take a proactive and integrative approach to being healthy and happy.
As a medical doctor, I understand the weight and frustration of feeling like there is more out there for you, but not knowing where to turn to first.
Unfortunately a patient who presents with symptoms of hormonal imbalance will often be dismissed (It’s just stress! You’re getting older – it happens), be given an antidepressant, be put on the birth control pill (to “regulate” hormones) or are told to relax, lose weight, or get counseling. Very rarely, the hormonal fluctuations will be evaluated with hormone testing.
WHAT IS BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY (BHRT)?
There has been a growing interest in a more natural approach to hormone regulation which has drawn attention to bioidentical hormones.
These hormones are identical in molecular structure to the hormones made in your own body and are made from a plant chemical extracted from yams and soy.
Bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) is often referred to as “natural hormone therapy” because these hormones act in the body just like the hormones we naturally produce in our own bodies.
The body cannot distinguish bioidentical hormones from the hormones it makes on it's own.
Bioidentical hormones are FDA-approved, and diminish many of the health risks and concerns associated with common hormone replacement therapy.
The disease support of BHRT is highly documented.
BHRT is suitable for both men and women.
FAQS
SHOULD I STOP MY HORMONES BEFORE MY INITIAL CONSULTATION?
No.
If you're already on BHRT, we want to see your blood levels with your actual treatment so we can adjust accordingly if needed.
If you're on other form of hormones (synthetic, birth control etc.), Dre Ouellet will proceed with the consultation before making any recommendations.
WHAT SHOULD I PREPARE FOR MY INITIAL CONSULTATION?
You will receive consent forms to fill out before your consultation. Please make sure to send it back to us 24h prior to your appointment.
HOW LONG DO I HAVE TO STAY ON BHRT?
That's totally up to you ! You can take them short term for symptoms relief or long term if you want to add the health benefits.
Replacing all of our deficient hormones to levels we had in our youth is beneficial to both our health and quality of life. Our hormones decline through aging (usually in our 30's), menopause, disease or trauma. The lost of those hormones is one of the main reason for our physical and mental deterioration as we get older.
SYNTHETIC VS BIOIDENTICAL HORMONES
The synthetic hormones were first developed for controlling the symptoms of menopause and fighting osteoporosis and heart disease. However synthetic hormones produce abnormal metabolites that can cause side effects and increase risk of cancer, heart disease and stroke.
On the other hand, bio-identical hormones means that they are identical to human hormones. Those are found in yams and soy. We call them "natural" because the body accepts and metabolizes these hormones as if it made them. There are numerous studies showing the long term benefits of hormone therapy. You just need to make sure you receive the right hormone (bio-identical) in the right amount.
ARE THE SERVICES COVERED BY INSURANCE?
Unfortunately the consultation and follow-up with the registered nurse and medical doctor are not covered by any insurance in Canada. On the other hand, most of the insurance will cover your medications (bio-identical hormones)
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM THE INITIAL VISIT AND HOW OFTEN DO I NEED FOLLOW-UPS?
During the initial consultation the medical team will review your health history, concerns/goals with BHRT and request for blood tests. You will have your first follow-up with the doctor to review the results of the blood tests and discuss a treatment plan a few weeks after the initial consultation. In general, follow-ups are at 3,6,9 months for the first year of treatment and then every 6-12 months based on your response to the treatment.
